How to Plan an Outdoor Living Space

Creating an outdoor space you can enjoy with friends and family might sound like a challenging DIY project, but it can be a lot of fun. You don't need to be a professional contractor to pull the project off; you only need the right equipment and vision!

How to Design an Outdoor Living Space (6 Tips)

Beautiful outdoor patio with grill and fireplace

Outdoor spaces enable you to create a place outside your home just for you or your family and friends. This space can be anything, from a grill area to a zen garden where you can relax. However, you need to understand certain aspects to design the perfect outdoor space for your home.

Here are the main factors to consider when creating your ideal outdoor space:

1. Understand Your Outdoor Space

You can think of your outdoor space as an extension of your home because that’s what it will become. Whether you choose to have an outdoor dining area or kitchen, it needs to feel like it belongs to the rest of your home. The best way to do this is to understand your home’s personality and design aesthetic. Then, you can plan your outdoor space based on it.

2. Think About Its Purpose

Once you know what type of style you need, you have to choose the purpose of your outdoor space. An outdoor kitchen, for instance, will not have the same feel as a reading space surrounded by a calming garden. Therefore, your space’s purpose will determine the furniture and lighting you’ll need.

To help you understand the purpose of your outdoor space, you should consider the following:

  • Do you like hosting parties or BBQs?
  • Are you into meditation?
  • Will there be kids and pets in your area?
  • How many people visit your home at a time?

3. Consider the Layout and Surroundings

The key to designing an enjoyable outdoor space is to consider the layout of your home and its surroundings. For instance, if you want an outdoor dining space, you should consider having the kitchen next to it. That way, when food is ready, you can easily transport it to the table.

Each area should have a logical function so that everything is functional while enhancing the personality and style of your home. The same principle applies to the surroundings. If you have a lot of bushes and trees, it would be better to create a colorful garden where you can sit and relax. Think about the view you have from your outdoor space and whether you can channel it.

4. Consider Weather Conditions and Sun Exposure

Two other elements you need to consider are your outdoor space’s overall weather conditions and exposure. If it is very windy where you live, you’ll need to consider not adding elements that the wind could easily move. Additionally, if there’s too much sun exposure, you’ll need to add something to create shade like a pergola or an umbrella. You’ll be glad you thought about this element on sunny days.

5. Focus on the Foundation

When it comes to the foundation of your outdoor space, we recommend a combination of surfaces, plants, and furniture. Different textures and colors can evoke strong emotions that can influence how you feel when you are outdoors. Try to find a harmonious feel, combining modern materials with nature, so that your space feels like it belongs to your home and its surroundings.

6. Create the Right Ambiance

After carefully thinking of every previous factor, you can start creating the right environment for your outdoor space. Include flowers, bushes, trees, water fountains, and the right outdoor furniture for the space. In this part of the process, you can choose to add lighting or fire pits to your outdoor area. Once you have considered every one of these factors, you can proceed to create your outdoor living space design plans. Be bold and unique and showcase your personality through the landscape design.
