How to Make Grilled Cheese on the Grill
Few sandwiches are as popular as grilled cheese sandwiches. These delicious, fast-to-make snacks can be as simple as bread and cheese. Or, they can be something more interesting like adding tomatoes and turkey. Plus, if you make your grilled cheese on the grill, it will have a delicious, smoky flavor.
In today’s guide, we’ll teach you how to make a delicious grilled cheese sandwich the way it should be done: on a grill!
Can You Make Grilled Cheese on a Grill?
Although it has the word grill in its name, grilled cheese is a dish that most people make in a panini press rather than on an actual grill. However, you can make this delicious snack using your outdoor grill, which is not a difficult process.
You only need the right ingredients, an outdoor grill, and patience. Grilled cheese is also a dish that allows you to get experimental, such as adding different types of vegetables and even some meat. It all depends on your preferred tastes!
Ingredients for Making Grill-Grilled Cheese
Grilled cheese only requires cheese and two slices of bread, but those two ingredients won’t create a delicacy. So, we recommend you add some extra ingredients.
Here’s what you need to make a grilled, grilled cheese:
- Two thick slices of bread (the type is up to you)
- Two tablespoons of salted butter
- Three ounces of cheese (American, cheddar cheese, pepper jack, or Havarti)
- Optional extras: turkey, grilled veggies, caramelized onions, or roasted peppers.
How to Make Grilled Cheese on the Grill
These are the steps you need to follow to make grilled cheese on grills:
- Start by preheating your grill to a medium heat. Meanwhile, brush your grates until they are fully clean. That’s where you will place the grilled cheese, and bits of charred leftovers don’t go well with bread.
- Now, spread the butter on both sides of the bread. We love it when it’s extra buttery, but this step depends on your preference.
- Once the bread has been buttered, it is time to assemble the sandwich. Add the cheese and any other extra ingredients you might like. We recommend a couple of pieces of thinly sliced turkey for a delicious smoky flavor.
- After assembling the sandwich, you can place it on the grill. Using a spatula, press down firmly to get those distinctive grill marks. Then close the grill lid and let the sandwich cook for around four minutes.
- At minute two, check the sandwich. If the temperature is right, let it cook for another two minutes. Then flip it and let it cook for another four minutes on that side until the cheese is melted completely.
- Remove the sandwich from the grill and enjoy!
If the bread is toasting too quickly, switch to indirect heat. You want a toasty and smoky flavor, but not a burnt one. So be careful and check on your sandwich every minute or so until it is done.
